How to Order Food at Subway in English

american english english Jun 27, 2023

I must confess, I have a bit of an obsession with Subway. Not only is it a delicious choice, but it's also healthy, budget-friendly, and full of options. Over the years, I've become something of a regular, and I know exactly what I'm going to order on a given day. If you're learning English and aren't sure how to order food in places like Subway, I'm here to guide you through it.

Phrases for Ordering Food

Let's begin with the simple stuff. When you enter Subway, the first thing you do is tell the worker what kind of sandwich you want. You could do this by saying, "Can I get a...?" and then say the sandwich you like. For example, "Can I get a six-inch turkey?"

Another way is to ask if they have something specific. Like this: "Do you have wheat flatbread?"

How to Respond to Offers

Sometimes, the Subway employee will offer something you don't want. In that case, you can decline politely by saying, "No, thank you" or specify, "No cheese, thank you."

But if they offer something you do want, show your agreement with, "Yes, that would be great," or "Yeah, that would be great, thanks."

Specifics of Ordering at Subway

Now, onto the specifics of Subway. Here, you get to choose the vegetables you want on your sandwich. If there are some you don't want, say, "I'll have everything but..." For instance, "I'll have everything but sweet peppers and pickles."

When it's time for sauces, use phrases like, "I'd like," or "I'd like to have." Such as, "I'd like mustard, a little bit of honey mustard, a little bit of yellow mustard."

To add something to your order, simply say, "Can I also add...?" As in, "Can I also add olive oil and vinegar?"  At the end of your order, you could say, "Could I also get a raisin cookie?"

So, how does it all come together in a real-life situation? Here's a quick dialogue to illustrate:

Customer: Hi, can I get a six-inch turkey on wheat flatbread?

Employee: Of course. Would you like any cheese?

Customer: No cheese, thank you.

Employee: And for the vegetables?

Customer: I'll have everything but sweet peppers and pickles.

Employee: Any sauces for you today?

Customer: I'd like mustard, a little bit of honey mustard, a little bit of yellow mustard.

Employee: Anything else?

Customer: Can I also add olive oil and vinegar? And, I'll take a raisin cookie.

Employee: Sure thing!

By remembering these phrases and putting them into practice, you'll soon find that ordering food in English is as satisfying as the sandwich you've expertly crafted. So don't shy away from mistakes—embracing them is part of the journey. Happy ordering!
